Post by: Will Hyde | October 03, 2023

Are you a UK-based teacher dreaming of making a move to the picturesque landscapes of New Zealand? The idea of teaching in this beautiful country can be exciting and fulfilling, but it does come with some specific requirements and procedures. In our recent webinar, we gathered essential Q&A information to help UK teachers understand what it takes to embark on this remarkable teaching journey in New Zealand. Here’s a summary of the key questions we covered:

  1. Eligibility and Teaching Qualifications:
  • Q: Am I eligible to teach in New Zealand if I have QTS (Qualified Teacher Status)?
  • A: To teach in New Zealand, all teachers are required to hold an eligible teaching qualification and be registered with the NZ Teachers Council. If your qualification is not pre-approved by NZQA (New Zealand Qualifications Authority), you may need an IQA (International Qualifications Assessment) assessment.
  1. Pre-Approved Qualifications:
  • Q: How do I check if my teaching qualification is pre-approved?
  • A: You can visit the NZQA website to see if your qualification is pre-approved for primary or secondary education in New Zealand.
  1. IQA Assessment:
  • Q: What if my qualification is NOT pre-approved by NZQA?
  • A: If your qualification is not pre-approved, you will need to apply for an IQA assessment, ensuring that you submit a teaching qualification.
  1. Meeting Core Requirements:
  • Q: What if my qualification did not meet core requirements to teach in New Zealand?
  • A: In such cases, you may want to speak with the NZ Teachers Council directly and explore the possibility of applying for a discretionary pathway to gain endorsement in a particular teaching field, such as early childhood or primary education.
  1. Teacher’s Registration:
  • Q: How do I apply for teacher registration in New Zealand?
  • A: You can find detailed information on applying for teacher registration on the Teaching Council of New Zealand website.
  1. Teaching Sectors:
  • Q: What sectors can I teach if I have a pre-approved teaching qualification?
  • A: If your qualification is on the pre-approved list, you can teach in the primary and secondary sectors, provided you also have experience in your desired field and obtain teacher registration in New Zealand.
  1. Early Childhood Education:
  • Q: Can I teach in early childhood education if I already have pre-approval?
  • A: Unfortunately, pre-approval does not apply to early childhood education. Early childhood teachers must undergo a paid IQA assessment that meets core requirements in ECE and/or primary.
  1. Support from Prospero Teaching:
  • Q: Can Prospero Teaching support teachers living in countries other than the UK?
  • A: Prospero Teaching supports teachers from around the world. To be eligible for a teaching position in New Zealand, you need an eligible teaching qualification (pre-approved or NZQA assessed), teacher registration, relevant experience, managerial references, and eligibility for working rights in New Zealand.
  1. Available Teaching Roles:
  • A: In New Zealand, various teaching roles are available, including early childhood education (0-5 year olds), primary and intermediate (5-13 year olds), secondary teaching (14-18 year olds), and special education.

If you’re a UK teacher considering a move to New Zealand, these Q&A points should serve as a valuable starting point for your research and planning. Remember that fulfilling your teaching aspirations in New Zealand may require careful preparation and adherence to specific guidelines, but the rewards of teaching in this beautiful country can be truly extraordinary. Explore your options, gather the necessary qualifications, and embark on a teaching adventure that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
