When is tuition needed?

There are various instances when a tutor may be needed. Firstly, when a pupil might be struggling in a particular subject or area of their learning and may need some extra support outside of school hours to raise their attainment. This type of tuition is supplementary tuition as it is in addition to the learning already happening in School.

Another time tuition is needed is when a pupil cannot or is not accessing learning via school or other education provision. Students may be unable to cope within a classroom setting or may have a specialist or medical need that prevents them from learning in this way. This type of tuition is known as Alternative Provision Tuition (AP). This tuition take place during school hours and is used to support pupils as an alternative to full-time schooling.

What does a tutor do?

The role of a tutor is to provide additional instruction and to support students who need help in a particular area of learning. Tutors do this by planning personalised sessions in line with the students understanding as well as teaching subject specific material to raise attainment and ensure they make progress.

A Tutor’s role is varied and can change depending on the pupil(s) they work with. However, there are some common roles and responsibilities including:

• Assessing students’ understanding to identify areas that need improvement.
• Developing personalised session plans and activities to help students make progress.
• Providing feedback to students as well as parents/carers to help students improve.
• Monitoring students’ progress and adjusting teaching methods accordingly
• Encouraging and motivating students to stay engaged and focused.
• Providing a welcoming learning environment for pupils to learn
• Maintaining professionalism with students and parents/carers

Overall, a tutor plays an important role in helping students make progress and gain confidence in their ability.

Is tutoring right for me?

Tutoring is a rewarding job however it can be challenging at times. Therefore, there are a few things to consider before you decide whether becoming a tutor is right for you:

Do you enjoy working with students and helping them make progress and increase their confidence?

Do you have strong communication skills and can explain concepts in a clear and understandable way?

Do you have a passion for a particular subject or area of study?

Are you patient and can work well with students who may learn at different paces or have different learning styles?

Do you have experience working with students, whether through teaching, mentoring, or other roles?

Can you commit to regular tutoring sessions?

If these qualities sound like a good fit for you, becoming a tutor may be a fulfilling and rewarding experience. However, it’s important to recognise that tutoring can be tough at times and will require you to have patience and resilience, as well as being adaptable to help students make progress and reach their goals.
