On March 3rd it was World Book Day… Throughout the week, we joined the celebration for WBD’s 25th anniversary by hosting a competition to win up to £250 worth of school book tokens.
We are delighted with the response we’ve had and would like to thank everyone who took the time to enter. The first 50 entries were rewarded for their efforts with a £10 book token. Below you will find our 3rd, 2nd and 1st prize winners!
We received entries from a wide range of page-turning teacher fancy dress ideas, wonderful wall displays and creative class activities.
“You shall go to the ball!”
This teacher brought some magic to her nursery classroom with a wonderful fairy godmother costume.
Appearing in many stories and fairy tales, fairy godmothers are characterised as guiding figures with magical powers and excellent morals. Or is that teachers? They are one and the same in this classroom, clearly!
This whole year group of teachers and teaching assistants dressed up as the full rainbow spectrum of crayons.
Inspired by the charming book, ‘The Day The Crayons Quit’ this team found a great stimulus for teaching empathy skills whilst bringing colour to the classroom.
‘Can we do some colouring in next, miss?’
We couldn’t resist this picture of Pebbles the class dog getting involved here. His classroom is set up with a special reading corner complete with comfy chair and cosy blankets.
With your best friend by your side, there’s no better feeling than snuggling up with a great book.
Oh, and Pebble’s favourite story? Harry Paw-ter and the Philosopher’s Bone!
Second-prize went to this fantastic effort from a KS1 Primary Teacher, who brought to life the wiggly finger puppet from ‘Taco Tuesday.’
We love this colourful picture book which makes fantastic use of rhyming and alliteration throughout. It definitely had us bookmarking all the Mexican lunch options near our office too. Tasty!
We are sure this teacher will use her winning book tokens to pick even more entertaining and interactive books for her class.
And now for the winner …*Drumroll*
…Our fabulous winner this year goes to a terrific team effort turning one classroom into Alice’s wonderland.
We are big fans of the Mad Hatter and White Rabbit outfits, we’re sure none of the children wanted to be late that day! We also love the big Cheshire Cat-like grin on the ace of spades, what a card…
It is fun and collaborative efforts like this that really help to create a buzz in the classroom, instilling a love of learning in the children.
For Primary aged students especially, it’s very powerful to see adults demonstrating they still truly enjoy immersing themselves in the world of books.
Great work team with your very novel outfits! We hope that your winning book tokens help to keep the fun going through the Spring term.
The event was originally organised globally by UNESCO to promote reading among children of all ages. In the UK and Ireland, this charity event sees every child in full-time education receiving a voucher to spend on books.
Reading for pleasure is of course promoted in schools all year round. We hope that you have taken the opportunity to discuss the benefits of regular reading with your class.
Reading is great for children for so many reasons:
Thanks for checking out this post on our World Book Day winners. We already can’t wait for next year’s competition which will be even bigger and better.
Now, where did I put my reading book?
