In January, the NHS launched a campaign to raise awareness of their mental health services. Supported by artists such as Craig David and Laura Mvula, the NHS are encouraging anyone who is experiencing mental health concerns including anxiety and depression to seek support.
The NHS’s talking therapies have been accessed by over 2 million people since the start of the pandemic. However, recent stats show that more than half of the UK population were concerned about their mental health in 2021, meaning that many more people could benefit from this service. The start of the year can be an especially tough time for many, so we hope that people are encouraged by this campaign to come forward.
Gillian Keegan, the Mental Health Minister stated, “The British people have shown great resilience and support for each other over the last two years, but it’s understandable the pandemic might continue to affect our mental wellbeing with people feeling anxious, low or worried – particularly in the winter months.
“It’s vital we look after our mental health and talking therapies provide great support for anybody experiencing anxiety or depression”
Talking Therapy can be accessed through your GP, but you can also self-refer online. Following referral, a mental health nurse will carry out an assessment with you over the phone. You will then be offered access to the service. Services are accessible in person, over video or as an online course and can take place one-to-one or in small local groups.
Our Student Support Services enables students to get the help they need to make the most of university life with a dedicated mentor or tutor.
Prospero Student Support Services offer mentoring for students through a range of study-based skills such as assignment planning, time management and research techniques.
During higher education or university, students experience a sudden increase in independence. This freedom can be both exhilarating and bewildering. Especially when, for the first time, students take charge of their own time with deadlines to meet. The students that we work with are often faced with a range of barriers to their learning which could include special educational needs, disability and mental health issues.
Accessing Prospero Student Support Services can alleviate a lot of this pressure. We provide mentors and tutors who assist students with planning and scheduling their revision sessions, making sure they submit their essays on time despite their busy schedules. This regular friendly point of contact offers a huge mental health boost to students. In addition, mentors work closely with other support functions attached to the university. In cases where students are experiencing serious mental health issues, mentors can advise them on how to get help and refer them to the appropriate resources.
