Here at the Prospero Group we are proud to employ and work with a lot of fantastic women. And International Women’s Day is as good a day as any other to celebrate them, their characters, careers and contribution to Prospero.
We asked them some questions about which other women have inspired them and their experience of being a woman in the work place. Here are their answers…
Erin, Teacher & Candidate Manager
Which woman has inspired you the most during your life?
The woman who has inspired me the most in my life was my Grade 12 Religion teacher. Even though my father is a teacher, I never thought about being one myself until having Ms. Gee for Grade 12 Ethics and Philosophy. She was charismatic, authoritative, knowledgeable and creative. She made the content of that course engaging and we participated in a final project that was about community outreach which no other class was allowed to do. She was passionate about what she was teaching which made me passionate and the way she taught inspires the way I teach. In addition to being an amazing teacher, she was also caring and supportive of all her students. There were a lot of issues with different students that year, my own mum had been diagnosed with cancer and she was always willing to talk or provide a calm place for us to be reflective/peaceful.
What do you consider ‘female’ attributes?
I consider some of the following to be female attributes: strength, kindness, generosity and dedication.

What do you think it takes to be a successful woman in a working environment?
Don’t focus on being one of the few women in a field or an industry. Instead concentrate on consistently honing your skills to make yourself invaluable and an expert in your area or industry of choice. Do this by holding yourself to a standard of excellence and putting in the hours that make a difference in moving a business and your career forward.
What do you think could be improved to help empower women in the workplace?
There are so many things but one would be, you speak up, but you need to be direct in your speech. Don’t add qualifiers that make you seem insecure or powerless. You know the ones. “I’m not sure if you’ll agree”, “I’m sorry,” or “I’m not sure what you’ll think.” Don’t apologise for speaking! You’re there for a good reason. Own that. Most importantly, be brief. It’s important to have the ability to topline your information. No one wants to listen to long-winded explanations.

Tell us a little bit about your role at Prospero – which sector you work in and what your job involves.
I am a Team Manager for the Health & Social Care department in London and my role is to bring in new business, build up our database system and motivate and support my 2 team members. It has not been easy.
What 2-3 tips would you suggest for others to be able to build their confidence to take bold steps?
Be confident NOT arrogant, be open to change and learn to LISTEN – that is why we have 2 ears and 1 mouth, so we listen twice as much as we speak.

Which woman has inspired you the most during your life?
My Mum because she’s strong-minded, has a great ethical code but also a devilish sense of humour; she can make me laugh through anything.
What do you think it takes to be a successful woman in a working environment?
The ability to engage well with people, resilience and to be able to articulate your own ideas.
Tell us a little bit about your role at Prospero – which sector you work in and what your job involves.
My job is to work closely with a small number of schools to make sure we are delivering the best possible service in finding them top quality teachers and support staff.
What do you consider ‘female’ attributes?
Emotional intelligence, strength and a sense of fun.
